Chris + Jillian
I’ve known Chris for quite a while now. He was the videographer of a few weddings that I photographed. He laughed at the way I would twist sideways to get a shot and I marveled at his artistry. He is kind, present, and insanely creative. He is the genius behind Sky Focus Films! Check them out! Seriously.
I remember a few years ago when I got a message from Chris. I had referred him for a wedding I’d be shooting in Breckenridge that summer. He opened by saying thanks for the recommendation but wasn’t sure if it would work out to come to Colorado for the wedding (it ended up working out!) and then he said this:
“I would love to work with you again… your photography specifically has actually played a part inspiring me to be more myself this past year and really embrace the way I’ve always wanted to shoot. (Bet you didn’t know that!) I love how all of your work feels real and in the moment. It has this organic beauty about it… you let moment just be. Anyway, hope you are doing well. I love your work! Thanks again.”
I was floored reading this. I had looked up to Chris and his work since I met him, so to hear such kind and encouraging words from him meant more than I can adequately say. I had to reread it several times to make sure I hadn’t dreamt it up. It meant that much to me. It still gives me goosebumps to read it. I was and still am incredibly humbled by his words.
Fast forward to the wedding in Breckenridge, Chris and I were sitting in the back of a truck with the couple (Abby and Dan) on their wedding day heading out to explore Breckenridge for some sunset photos, when Abby asked him who was going to photograph his wedding. He nonchalant-ly replied…”Hopefully, Beth.” I tried to play it cool, but inside I was thinking…”What! Chris Martin wants me to photograph his wedding! Holy Crap!”
So, last September I flew to Minnesota, met Chris and his family at a house in the country outside of St. Paul and got the amazing opportunity to document their day.
Jillian, his wife now, is Chris’ perfect match. Her eyes radiate whenever she sees Chris. She is kind and strong and witty and is one of those people who gives you her full attention when you’re together. They are quirky, grounded, and two of the most wonderful people I’ve been blessed to cross paths with. Their day was centered around time with family and close friends (plus a little adventure in the Minnesota forests!)
Here are a few photos from their day…
